In an epic three-way battle for the top spot, it’d be Cole Powell coming out on top for the OSCAAR Modified feature victory at Kawartha Speedway on Friday night.
June Kawartha Speedway winner Cory Horner won the first heat ahead of Dale Reinhart, Max Beyore, Mike Hearty, Brad Stevenson, Luke Gignac, Linc Brown, Gary Elliott and Josh Gruntz.
The second heat featured a quick caution with Dave Hodgkinson going around in turn two. Cole Powell picked up the victory ahead of Chris Milwain, Connor James, Tim Tolton, Adam Hagen, Mike Hearty, Stu Robinson Jr., Hodgkinson and Jase Cornell.
The third heat also had a quick yellow flag, as Marty Monette spun around on the backstretch, possibly due to contact from David Balych who sustained a flat tire. AJ Emms picked up the victory ahead of John Harper, Mark Gordon, Ryan Dick, Monette and Wally Wilson.
Brad Stevenson won the fourth heat ahead of Milwain, Gignac, Elliott, Reinhart, Hodgkinson, Gruntz, McFadden, and Cornell.
John Harper won the fifth heat ahead of Robinson Jr., Balych, Powell, Emms, Monette, James, Tolton and Hagen.
Max Beyore won the sixth heat ahead of Dick, Hearty, Horner, Brown, Gordon, and Wilson.
Come feature time, David Balych would start on pole ahead of Marty Monette, Connor James, Chris Milwain, John Harper, Dale Reinhart, Max Beyore, AJ Emms, Luke Gignac, Mark Gordon, Cole Powell, Gary Elliott, Stu Robinson Jr., Ryan Dick, Brad Stevenson, Tim Tolton, Adam Hagen, Mike Hearty, Linc Brown, Dave Hodgkinson, Cole McFadden, Duane Cinnamon, Jase Cornell, Josh Gruntz, and Wally Wilson.
The first few laps saw the shuffling happen quickly as Milwain grabbed the early advantage on Lap 3, with Monette and Emms side-by-side for second. The pair continued to run side-by-side till the first caution flew on Lap 5 as a result of a crash in turns one and two involving Gignac, Balych and Beyore.
The first attempt at a restart resulted in another wreck, this time off of turn four involving Monette, Hearty, Dick, Brown and James.
Milwain got a good restart, with Emms and Powell side-by-side for second. Emms got the spot initially on Lap 6 ahead of Powell and Stevenson. Powell then back got alongside Emms on Lap 6, with the caution flying a lap later as a result of Beyore having a problem on the backstretch.
Milwain got another good restart with Powell slotting into second ahead of Emms, Stevenson, Harper and Horner as Elliott and Robinson Jr. went side-by-side for seventh at Lap 9.
With 16 laps complete, Milwain held serve ahead of Powell, Emms, Stevenson, Harper, Horner and Robinson Jr. Horner then got alongside Harper for fifth, completing the pass before getting alongside Stevenson for fourth with 11 laps to go. Horner completed the pass on Lap 20 to take fourth ahead of Harper, Stevenson, Robinson Jr. and Elliott.
As Stevenson began to fade back, Elliott grabbed the sixth spot on Lap 22, with Reinhart following him through as Robinson Jr. and McFadden took Stevenson three-wide. Stevenson would head down pit road, as the caution flew for Tolton making significant contact with the frontstretch outside wall, followed by the inside wall.
The restart with five to go resulted in a show for the fans, as Milwain and Powell battled side-by-side for the top spot. Powell got the top spot, and then led the rest of the way en route to victory.
Cole Powell picked up his first career OSCAAR victory, followed by Chris Milwain in second for his third top-five of 2017. Cory Horner finished third for his fifth top-five, followed by AJ Emms in fourth, also scoring his fifth top-five. John Harper finished fifth for his first top-five since Flamboro in May.
Gary Elliott finished sixth with his fifth top-10, followed by Dale Reinhart with a second straight seventh place finish. Stu Robinson Jr. finished eighth in his first OSCAAR start of 2017, with Gignac ninth in his first finish outside of the top-five this season. Connor James rounded out the top-10 for his first top-10 in just his second OSCAAR start.
