Putting together one of the most consistent campaigns of all competitors in 2017, Cory Horner completed the season fourth in the OSCAAR Modified standings.
“Looking back on 2017, I feel it was a pretty good season,” Horner reflected. “(From) winning my first career feature in an OSCAAR modified and again getting my first ever hat trick when I won my second feature a couple of weeks later at Sauble Speedway, (to) leading the points for a short period of time.
“There was a lot of firsts for me this season but I also know there were some mistakes along the way that I would like to improve on so we can possibly win a few more features and make a better run at the championship.”.
He showed speed right from the season opener at Flamboro Speedway, going from an eighth-place starting spot in the feature to finish fourth. The following weekend at Kawartha Speedway, though, was even better. After winning one of the qualifying heats and starting second in the feature, Horner remained in the runner-up spot throughout the majority of the event, before passing Max Beyore with three laps to go for his first career OSCAAR victory.
“It was a huge weight off my back as I was getting tired of finishing second and starting to question whether or not I would ever win one,” Horner said. “Getting that feature win gave me a lot of confidence moving forward and made me want to work even harder to win more.”
The momentum carried forward in the return to Flamboro Speedway next month, as he posted a fifth-place finish. He then led flag-to-flag en route to his second career victory at Sauble Speedway.
Returning to the sight of his first win, Horner made his way up through the field at Kawartha Speedway for another impressive top-five, this time crossing the line in third. He then followed it up with a solid seventh-place finish at Flamboro Speedway.
The driver of the No. 79h Custom Forming, Bonsma Brothers Concrete Pumping, BC Racecars and Nick Oram Auto Body Modified continued to impress as we got knee-deep into summer, posting a fourth-place finish at Peterborough Speedway to start August.
Horner would be unable to attend the second Sauble Speedway event, so he got James Horner to fill in for him. Unfortunately, that did not go as planned with a heat crash taking him out of the running early.
With heavy damage, questions surrounded whether Horner would be able to make the final three races of the season. Though with hard work during the month long break, he showed up at Sunset Speedway in September ready to roll. He started off the weekend with a heat win, followed by driving his way from a 10th-place starting spot to fifth in the feature.
He followed it up with a third-place finish at Flamboro Speedway, followed by a fifth-place finish at Peterborough Speedway despite having to make an early race pit stop.
While most drivers have been having quiet winters so far, the same can’t be said for Horner. With the help from Dan Price and Brent McLean, Horner went down and ran the Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium Speedway in New Jersey. Despite running into some issues, the team was able to come away with a solid top-15 finish.
On behalf of OSCAAR, congratulations to Cory Horner on a successful season from start to finish. We look forward to seeing you back on track in 2018.
