In a season highlighted by a couple podium finishes, Jeff Showler put together a solid rookie campaign en route to placing eighth in the OSCAAR Modified year-end standings.
The opening weekend at Sunset Speedway would not go as smoothly as he hoped, with an incident in his heat race causing him to start at the back of the feature. Starting from last, he would make his way forward, scoring a 12th-place finish despite a mid-race spin. He would then back it up with a 15th-place finish a couple weeks later at Kawartha Speedway.
For Showler, his background was racing at Delaware Speedway in their Super Stock division, so seeing success once the series hit the bigger tracks was no surprise. The inaugural trip to Jukasa Motor Speedway saw him score a heat victory, before running up front all feature long en route to a third-place finish.
He was able to carry the momentum back to Sunset for Canada Day weekend, making his way to the front to score a runner-up finish to eventual series champion Cory Horner. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for the return to Kawartha as a mid-race incident resulted in an 11th-place finish. The mid-summer bad luck carried into Flamboro Speedway as Showler showed potential to run up front in the main event, but was taken out in an early race crash.
Kicking off the month of August at Peterborough Speedway was exactly what he needed, as he would pace the early stages of the 50-lap feature before crossing the line with a third-place finish. The beach also treated him well, as he scored another win before finishing fourth at Sauble Speedway. The return to Sauble a month later started off well with another qualifier victory, but mechanical issues forced him to miss the feature.
He would then start off the short track playoffs with a 10th at Sunset Speedway’s Velocity 250, but an early race incident would take him out of the running at Flamboro Speedway’s Frostoberfest.
With the speed and potential shown, Jeff Showler is easily considered a dark horse for the 2019 season.
