If there was an award for the most dedicated Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modified racer, it would certainly go to Mike Hearty. To be able to compete with the division, Hearty makes the trip from Sault St. Marie to the various tracks on the schedule.
His reason for his continued dedication each season is simple – the Modifieds are an amazing, fun car to drive.
“This should be the best year yet as I aligned myself with great people and secured two marketing partners Furniture Surplus Store and Flawless Roofing which help financially on the car,” he commented. “Also my crew guys have learnt a ton and are getting the job done.”
Hearty feels if his crew continues to work in the direction that they are, success is right around the corner for him.
“We were so close to the front at a few races so we just need to bring that back with us to the races,” he said. “We just need to have little more luck and not get spun out by others when we are in a top 3 spot.”
If his team can put the pieces together, he feels that they can run top-five each race that they are at, but notes that his team is “giving it our all for our feature win in the Modified.”
The season opener could easily be the place that Hearty scores that victory, as he has made Sunset Speedway his home over the past couple of seasons.
“I feel in the last 10 years or so, Sunset has become my home track,” he commented. “The track ,staff and fans are awesome.”
Hearty knows it won’t be easy, though, as the competition should be high right from the beginning.
“I believe the modified class is full steam ahead right now with car count and competition,” he said. “I believe we are the series to be in right now and all the new cars coming per year is showing that this where racers need to be.”
Looking at his competitors, he feels four of the current competitors to keep an eye on are Gary McLean, Cory Horner, Dale Reinhart, and Chris Milwain. He’s also waiting to see Chris Mitchell make his debut as Hearty says Mitchell should “come out strong” when the time comes.
