When it comes to different forms of racecars, Wally Wilson admits always being a huge fan of modified competition, whether watching OSCAAR events or the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour down south.
“They’ve just always been one of my favourite racecars to watch and race cause the fields are always very close and the racing’s action packed and exciting to watch,” he recalled.
Over the past couple years, Wilson has gotten the chance to do battle behind the wheel of them himself, and will do so once again as part of the OSCAAR Modified tour.
“Entering this season, we’re definitely very excited to be back with the Modifieds once again,” he commented. “We’ve been hard at work in the shop and that should turn around into a positive outcome when it comes to race day!”
Wilson is hopeful of finishing top-10 in the final points standings this year, knowing it will take multiple top-five and top-10 finishes on the track to make it happen. As he states, his expectations are high as his team strives for excellence.
“I feel that I could be better on the entry to the corners,” he added. “It’s something I’ve been working at improving on and I feel once I get that down, we’ll be a contending team each week!”
Wilson showed speed last year, as evident by a top-10 at Sunset Speedway’s Fall Velocity. He also ran up the front in heat race action, as evident by a top-three at Flamboro Speedway. The speed allotted him a lot of opportunities to battle against others in the series, including a memorable experience with Jeff Walt.
“We were battling side by side for multiple laps, and it was probably one of the most fun races I’ve been a part of,” he recalled.
One of the tracks where he will hope to leave a lasting impression is Sauble Speedway, being his home track. However, he admits excitement surrounding Delaware Speedway virtue of the repave.
Wilson knows how to have success at Sauble Speedway, as evident by previous trips to victory lane behind the wheel of a midget.
“I find the biggest thing I’ve learned from racing midgets that I use in everything else would be that no matter how stressful a race day can be, remember to look at the positives and keep it fun,” he commented. “Of course, it’s not always easy to have a fun day at the track when things go wrong; but if you don’t have fun, you’re not going to continue loving the sport!”
Unfortunately, it hasn’t always been a fun experience behind the wheel of a Midget, as it was the sight of his worst crash in racing, taking place in 2019 at Sunset Speedway.
“I was running for Eric Wagner in his #50 car,” he started. “We started deep in the field and slowly worked my way up to the top five, when one of the leaders spun in the center of the corner. I went high to avoid and was committed to that lane; then all of a sudden he went up the racetrack leaving me with nowhere to go. The damage to both cars was small, but he ended up with a broken leg and I had a sore elbow! It was a hard hit for sure!”
