Autumn Colours Classic. Frostoberfest. Spring Velocity. Fall Velocity. Countless invitational victories.
Throughout his career, Andy Kamrath has captured numerous victories in a variety of different cars. However, there was one thing that always eluded him – a championship.
With eight feature wins and 14 heat victories, that piece of the puzzle is no longer missing, as Kamrath captured the 2022 Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modifieds presented by Just Foam It Championship.
Everybody knew he would be apart of the conversation right from Spring Velocity at Sunset Speedway, after witnessing him win both heats. He wasted no time after taking the green flag in eighth, battling for third with just three laps on the board. He took the lead on Lap 7, holding off a challenge on an ensuing restart en route to victory.
He then headed to his home track of Sauble Speedway in June, picking up another pair of JRS Auctions heat victories to start sixth for the feature. He’d made his way up to third by Lap 4, taking the lead just four laps later. He was challenged on a pair of following restarts, but held on to make it two in a row.
Third time is a charm, or say they say as that was the case for Kamrath when he returned to Sunset. A single heat win set him up to take the green flag in sixth, with him up to second by Lap 8. He remained there until a caution at a halfway mark, taking advantage of the restart to secure the advantage, pacing the final 16 circuits to victory.
Kamrath looked to carry the momentum into July at Delaware Speedway in the same fashion, and started off strong with a heat victory. Unfortunately, the first lap of Friday evening’s feature did not go as planned, with contact down the backstretch resulting in a destroyed car. He’d keep himself in the conversation for the championship, offered a car to run by Kelly Balson for Saturday’s 40-lap affair. He ran just outside the top-five throughout the event, crossing the finish line in sixth.
The AK Motorsports team went to work over the next two weeks, rebuilding the car completely ahead of the series’ third event of 2022 at Sunset. Their efforts shined through with a heat win, and their driver up to second with just four laps on the board. Kamrath then took the lead on Lap 17, leading the rest of the way en route to scoring the victory in the feature fueled by Touchwood Cabinets.
The month of August saw the success keep on rolling, as Kamrath won both heats at Peterborough Speedway, taking the lead on Lap 11 to pace the rest of the way en route to victory. He got another qualifier victory at Flamboro Speedway, moving up into second just three laps into the feature after starting seventh. He’d keep pace with eventual race winner Jason Keen for the rest of the way through lap traffic left and right, but was unable to find a way by before the event was called 10 laps shy of the scheduled distance due to a wreck.
Kamrath’s return to Delaware Speedway saw him get the redemption he needed for the summer, taking the lead just six laps into the feature to lead the rest of the way. It was the same song and dance a week later at Flamboro, as another heat win and finding his way to first on Lap 11 got him the checkered flag this time around.
The Instant Classic put the perfect tip on the year at Peterborough, picking up his 14th heat victory and putting himself inside the top-three with 14 laps on the board. It took a bit, but he was able to track down the top-two, taking the lead with 28 laps on the board. He then held off a challenge on the late-race restart to capture the Autumn Colours Classic victory.
It seems no matter what type of car Kamrath gets behind the wheel of, he can find his way to victory lane. However, he can also be called something else now.
Congratulations, Champ!
