Despite the year starting off on a rough note, A.J. Emms was able to turn things around for a great Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modifieds presented by Just Foam It season.
Emms kicked off his Spring Velocity at Sunset Speedway on a high with a JRS Auctions heat victory, and looked poised to challenge for the feature victory. Unfortunately, the first lap of the event did not go as planned with an incident on the front stretch taking him out of contention.
The trek to Sauble Speedway in June saw the bad luck continue, with a spin in his second qualifier setting him up to start 13th for the 40-lap feature fueled by Touchwood Cabinets. Emms immediately began his climb to the front, making his way into the top-five with just 14 laps on the board, taking over second on the final restart for a runner-up finish. Returning back to Sunset Speedway, he was victorious in his second heat to set him up to start on pole for the feature. He led the initial 23 laps until a mid-race caution, ultimately crossing the finish line with a second.
The month of July started off with a poor qualifying effort at Delaware Speedway on the Friday evening, setting him up to start 13th for the feature. He barely snuck by the first lap eight-car crash on the backstretch, working his way forward through the rest of the event for a third. He returned to the half-mile on Saturday, putting together a solid qualifying effort to start fifth for the feature, taking over second on Lap 14 and remaining there for the rest of the feature.
Another heat victory allowed his trip back to Sunset Speedway to start the feature in fourth, with him taking the lead on Lap 3. He then led the next 14 laps, before getting passed for the top spot. He battled through the series of final restarts, maintaining track position for a second-place finish.
He carried the momentum to Peterborough Speedway in August to win both of his heats to start sixth for the feature. He wasted no time making his way forward, taking third with 16 laps on the board and remaining there through the rest of the event. Another strong qualifying effort at Flamboro Speedway allowed him to take third with three laps on the board at Flamboro Speedway, where he’d remain until the race was called short of it’s completion 10 laps short of the scheduled distance.
The final stretch of the year saw Emms return to Flamboro in October, kicking off the afternoon with another heat victory. He battled his way forward after starting eighth to break into the top-five with 10 laps on the board, crossing the finish line with a third-place finish.
He capped off his season at Peterborough’s Autumn Colours Classic with his eighth heat victory of 2022, and running inside the top-five all feature long, including a heated battle in the closing stages to hold off T.J. Edwards for a second-place finish.
Despite the season beginning on a rough note, A.J. Emms bounced back strong to complete the season with no other finishes off of the podium.
