After a rough start to 2016, things turned around for John Harper in the second half of the season en route to finishing sixth in the season-ending standings.
The year didn’t start out as Harper wanted, though, with five finishes outside of the top-10. He finished 11th at Flamboro Speedway, followed by a DNF at Delaware Speedway after spinning on Lap 22 while running fourth. The next two trips – both to Flamboro – resulted in 12th (steering issue on Lap 17) and 11th place finishes. The return to Delaware didn’t go much better as he failed to start the feature due to an issue in his heat.
While it was a rough start to the year, the next six races would go much better than those first five.
He kicked it off with a fifth place finish at Peterborough Speedway, set to carry the momentum to Flamboro Speedway. The pair of double 20-lap features went as planned, as he kicked off the first feature with a fourth place finish. In the second event, he started second alongside Dan Price. He was able to run down Price in the early stages, getting alongside him for the lead on Lap 4. Harper then put the No. 79 Transaxle Parts, Briar Dri-wall, Grisdale Race Products Modified out front on Lap 5. He then led the rest of the laps en route to scoring his first feature of the season.
The return to Delaware didn’t go as planned, though, as he posted an eighth place finish. However, it was enough for Harper to qualify for the inaugural OSCAAR Race for the Cup.
He’d kick off the two-race Chase with a fourth place finish at the Autumn Colours Classic, allowing him to be one of the three drivers eligible for the championship a week later at Flamboro. At Frostoberfest, he was able to put together a solid run with a sixth place finish, but it wouldn’t be enough to capture the title.
On behalf of OSCAAR, congratulations John Harper on your success this season. We look forward to seeing you once again in 2017.
